The proposed sequence is perception, comparison, value judgment, choice, sacrifice, toolmaking, and changed future. The capacity to recognize unrealized value may sit beneath toolmaking rather than follow from it.

A philosophical image
In Plato’s Cratylus, Socrates playfully interprets the Greek anthrōpos as ‘one who reflects on what he has seen.’ Modern historical linguistics does not treat this as a settled derivation; the word’s origin remains uncertain.
The passage matters here as an image, not a proof: the human sees, considers, and responds.

Freedom exposes direction
When ability is scarce, we mostly see what a person can manage. When ability becomes abundant, we begin to see what they choose. Increased capacity does not supply purpose; it exposes it.
